John began his career in law enforcement at the age
of 19 as a Cadet Officer. Once he turned 21 he became a Reserve Police Officer with the same agency, and remained
with the same agency for almost 10 years. During this time he became a Patrol Mt. Bike Operations Instructor and Defensive
Tactics Instructor for that agency. In 1995 he worked in retail loss prevention, and advanced
his way into a management position with that company. Even during this time he continued to volunteer his time as a
Reserve Police Offcer in order to prepare for his eventual career in law enforcement. In 1999 John was
hired as a Deputy and is currently a Field Training Officer, Hostage Negotiator, and Instructor with over 40 instructor and/or Master Instructor
certifications (primarily in officer survival skills). He has also served as an expert witness for Use of Force, and related topics. Recently he completed an assignment with the Training Unit where
he was responsible for ensuring the delivery of training to approximately 700 sworn members of the agency in both the
Corrections and Enforcement Divisions.
He was the Rangemaster for the entire sheriff's office, and was responsible for developing (and certifying) all
firearms training, supervising 30 Firearms Instructors, training and certifying agency Firearms Instructors, and overall supervision
of the firearms training program. Additionally, he has been an instructor for
the State of Oregon’s Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) and a Master Instructor for
TASER International. Return to Instructors |
